Cuba AyUUda's CUBA NIGHTS: Travelers' Tales and Potluck

We recently sent another group of travelers to Ian Sergeant in Cuba to explore the history of art and architecture, to nurture longstanding friendships, and to create new experiences as citizen diplomats.

Ian is back in Portland after spending several months abroad, and this Friday evening, he and his fellow travelers will share their experiences. The program will feature stories of service and adventure, from visiting the artists and youth who are renewing a neighborhood in Havana at Muraleando to visiting the incredible nature preserve of Cienaga de Zapata (specifically, the Bay of Pigs).

Come hear their stories and the plans for new adventures that might include you!

Cuba AyUUda Travelers' Tales Returns

Two groups recently visited Cuba and renewed UU connections and had new experiences as citizen diplomats. Travelers will share their experiences. Expect stories of service and adventure including visiting Trinidad to deliver messages from family, connecting with the artists and youth who are renewing a neighborhood in Havana at Muraleando, and witnessing incredible UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Several new trip leaders were vetted on this trip, so look forward to more frequent trips to Cuba in the near future!

....aaand we're back! After a prolonged hiatus from the world wide web due to lack of volunteer steam, we are back online. We hope you have fun perusing our site. Be sure to check out the website we set up for the Muraleando Art Project in Havana, Cuba.

If you'd like to receive the occasional email regarding fun events or trips to Cuba we are leading, just click here.

If you aren't friends with us on Facebook, please make that happen now. While we try to stay on top of our mailing list, Facebook might be the best way to stay informed in the moment, not only about Cuba AyUUda events, but also the most recent news regarding Cuba.

Finally, we are looking for a volunteer to occasionally post news on this site and to help bring it up in search engines. If you have a few hours to spare and this sounds like fun, please drop us a line!

Enjoy the site!

Obama has opened up relations with Cuba to pre-Bush levels! This is an excellent step in the right direction, hopefully toward completely dismantling the embargo. Unfortunately, US citizens are still unable to legally travel to Cuba unless they go via a permitted institution or have family in Cuba. Read more about it here.

Our December trip to Cuba was a huge success and an enriching experience for all ten travelers, as well as our friends in Cuba. Learn more about our adventure at our Travelers' Tales Potluck on Friday, January 28, at 6pm in Fuller Hall at First Unitarian Church in Portland, OR.

We are now accepting applications for our Afro-Cuba Connections Project. Learn more about how we are facilitating connections between US and Afro-Cuban youth.

Cuba AyUUda believes in openness and cooperation between cultures. Obviously the embargo against Cuba interferes with this. If you share the same beliefs, feel free to express this to Congress and help enact legislation that would eliminate the embargo for good.

Our annual fundraiser on May 21st was a smashing success!  We want to give many thanks to our graceful volunteers, talented performers, and generous sponsors & donors, particularly: Alma Chocolate, Santa Fe Cafe, Widmer Bros. Brewery, Portland Early Learning Project,
massage therapist Kathleen Arentz at Common Ground Wellness, and especially the Sylvia Beach Hotel.  Thank you all for helping to further the mission of Cuba AyUUda!

Also, our new Afro-Cuba Connections Project is underway.  Check the tab at the upper right.  We will update the website regularly with additional resources and information, including how to apply and qualify for a fellowship grant for travel to Cuba, so check back often!

If you'd like to keep abreast of anything having to do with Cuba, check out our Learn About Cuba page.  It contains a wealth of resources that will allow you to become an expert within days, or your money back!

Our Mission:
Cuba AyUUda connects US Americans with Cubans and Cuban life resulting in transformation through friendship and service.

What do we mean by service?
“At the center of the Universe is a loving heart that continues to beat and wants the best for every person. Anything we can do to help foster the intellect and spirit and emotional growth of our fellow human beings; that is our job. Those of us who have this particular vision must continue against all odds. Life is for service.”
